With our big recital looming in the distance, we started a new thing at this studio class... peer evaluations!! I love peer evaluations, as I'm sure all of my students do too! Haha! In my opinion, they are an important part of all studio classes for two reasons:
#1: They require the person who is doing the evaluation to really listen and be able to recognize all of the musicality goodness that is happening in the performance. Seriously... levels of learning and implementation of glorious musical knowledge happening here!!
#2: Sometimes a performer thinks they're playing one thing but the audience hears something completely different. Peer evaluations are a great tool for the performer to find out what their audience is actually hearing.
#2: We all come to the music table with different life experiences and perspectives that affect how we play our pieces. It's so important to hear those other perspectives and interpretations. It's fun to think we're always right and that we know the best, but if that is really the truth, how would we ever move forward? We would be stuck in our own world of false perfection! Peer evaluations give us a chance to hear those other perspectives and interpretations.
And then we sang Happy Birthday and had cake in honor of two of my favorite people: Maddy and Mozart!
I seriously love this group of people!
