My Music Morsel of the Week

This week I learned that the musical time that we live in is awesome. Not just awesome, but like swimming pool filled with chocolate and caramel and more chocolate awesome. I realize that I'm coming up on old woman status and that I've been living in this musical time for as long as dirt has been around, but this week it all hit me differently than it ever has. I have taken for granted that I can listen to anything I want, whenever I want. I have taken for granted that I can purchase whatever pieces I want to learn, whenever I feel like purchasing them. There are literally millions of songs at my fingertips. Songs of old, songs of new, songs of countless different cultures, songs of countless different genres and styles, songs of hundreds of different artists and composers, songs on cool commercials (you know what I'm talking about. Don't pretend you haven't sung those jingles like you were the one who wrote them.), etc, etc, and etc. We have music!!! Way back in the day, before my time with the dirt, people maybe got to listen to their favorite song maybe two or three times in their lives, even with the printing press invention of the 1400's. If they could get their hands on a copy of their favorite song and then had the means to play it, they would've been one of the lucky few. Otherwise, they literally were at the mercy of the composer and/or performers. So in other words, they had to just live it up in the moment and try to memorize everything they could about it. Look at us now!!! We don't even need the bygone implements of cassettes, cds, eight tracks, or records! We can still use those if we want, which still makes us pretty cool no matter what you youngun's say, but they're not even needed if we have a good internet connection and a handheld device! If it has been recorded, we can listen to it!

It fills our cars and our homes and our heads (when we wear earbuds or whatever) and our souls! I think I have cried listening to more songs this week than I ever have in my life because I'm so grateful I can hear as many times as I want to. And what's even betterest (that's totally a word), is that we have the privilege to learn whatever instrument we want nowadays. Just in my house alone we have two pianos, a keyboard from the 80's (so it's indescribably cool), a cello, two violins, a ukulele, an electric bass guitar, and an acoustic guitar, not to mention the tambourine, triangle, and wanna-be egg-shaped maracas (also indescribably cool), and the shower (I'm including that in the instrument list because the acoustics are fantastic). How amazing is that?! So, go listen to your favorite songs on repeat, because you can! Go sit down at your instrument or warm-up that voice of yours and just start music-ing your guts out, because you can! We live in the best musical time EVER!!
